Orthoses play an important role in the physical well-being of many individuals. In general terms, they are appliances for any part
of the body that serve to support, align, prevent or correct deformities of a body part, or to improve the function of moveable parts
of the body.
The DAFO® (dynamic ankle foot orthosis) supports the foot & ankle, and thereby affects the motion of the
entire body. DAFOs are most commonly used in patients with neuromuscular challenges. These products are geared towards the pediatric
patient, although many adults also benefit from the design concepts.
A DAFO® is designed to change the position of the patient’s
foot during normal daily life. The more involved and less mobile the foot, the more “pushing” the brace must do to hold the new foot
position. The wrap around design is excellent at keeping this pressure spread out over large areas.
DAFO's are developed for
our patients from custom castings performed by our therapists after thorough evaluation and functional assessment.
